Reading in Bloom competition
Churches in Reading Women's Centre entered the Reading in Bloom competition last year and won the bronze award for the communal gardens category. Currently, our garden is lovingly cared for by one of our volunteers at the centre who often gives up her time even when the centre is not open to ensure it is kept looking beautiful. We receive many compliments for the garden from people passing by the centre and the women who use our centre love to sit in it on a warm day. A big thank you to all who made it possible for us to win the award.
Queens Award for Voluntary Service
We were very proud to have won the Queens Award for Voluntary Service. The purpose of the award is to recognise groups of individuals who give up their time freely for the benefit of others. The Queens Award not only provides recognition of volunteer groups but also shows the high respect in which volunteering is held.
Churches in Reading Women's Centre is run mainly by volunteers, all with different skill sets who are dedicated and hard working and are highly valued by all. Their creativity and team work is amazing and in turn enables those who use the centre to enhance their skills or learn a new skill which helps to build up their self esteem. We are so blessed to have these talented women serving with us.
Projects and activities
The photos above are of our weekly seated exercise and movement programme which has been funded by Berkshire Community Fund. The project runs on a weekly basis and the aim is to encourage the ladies physical well being as well as stimulating their minds through group interaction. It is suitable for all women of any physical ability and is held in a fun and friendly environment to a backdrop of lively popular music. The sessions are always well attended and we are seeing positive changes in some of the attendees.
We also receive funding from other organisations in addition to donations from churches and individuals which keep the centre running and enable us to offer art and craft projects and other creative activities. Some of the activities we offer are card making, sewing, cross stitch, jewellery making, painting, making gifts, mosaics, poetry and writing, cake decorating and many more. Each activity is carefully planned to ensure the women receive maximum benefit from each session and can feel proud of their achievement by having something to show at the end of the day.
Take a look at some of the activities in the photos below.
